October 22, 1935 - January 31, 2022
Dioscorides Santiago, best known as Chago, Army Veteran and loving family man, has died at the age of 86. His love for this country was ever present until the day God called him home to heaven on January 31, 2022. Chago is survived by his beloved wife, Hilda; his loving children Hilda (Nana), Gilbert, Vilma, Noel and Vivian; his adoring grandchildren Jonathan, Jason, Justin, Timothy, Benjamin, Tara and Edwin; his precious great grandchildren Victoriana, Jameson, Mia and Asaiahs; his loving sons-in-law and daughters-in-law James, Christine, Eileen, Evelyn, Jeff and grand-daughters-in-law Denise, Zulfiye, and Jen. Chago was the youngest of eleven brothers and sisters. He and Hilda from Utuado, Puerto Rico met, fell in love, and married 65 years ago. They started a family with their first born in Puerto Rico and relocated to New York shortly thereafter to continue with their lives and with God’s blessing of conceiving a total of five children. In New York, he created lifelong friendships. These friendships and their families became an extension of his own nuclear family. Many, many beautiful gatherings enjoyed, and memories were created. Chago worked until the age of 71 years. His wife, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren were his life and purpose for living. He also cherished his brothers, sisters, nieces, and nephews. Always willing to give loving advice and a helping hand. Always, always showing his compassion for his fellow man by his actions. In keeping with his need to help, he was always fixing and repairing things for his household and anyone else who needed it. He strived to maintain an active daily life with daily walks and daily outings to the stores for his shopping desires. He absolutely adored his wife and showed it every day of his life. Chago was also an excellent cook. Each family member had a favorite dish, and he always made a point of making it for them when they came for a visit. Again, his love of family was ever present. Chago will remain a shining star in his family’s lives. May he rest in peace in God’s and our blessed Mary’s tender care.
