Raymond P. Hatton Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Raymond Hatton was born June 12, 1929 to parents Raymond and Mary {Clarke} Hatton. He passed away on June 20, 2022 at his home in Center Moriches, at the age of 93. He was predeceased by his adored wife of 56 years, Mary, in 2008. He is survived by his 8 children Eileen {Lou} Papa, Claire {Mick} Rooney, Mary "Barney" {Charlie} LaClair, Hugh {Karen} Hatton, John {Dawn} Hatton, Gerry Eaton, Raymond {Carolyn} Hatton, and Claudia {Pat} Browne. Grandchildren Brian, Jennifer, Jason, Tess, Luke, Emily, Maureen, Courtney, Chris, Nick, Ben, Sarah, Haley, Jack, Kevin, Katie, Raymond, and Meredith. 17 great grandchildren. Sister-in-law Barbara Oliva and her children. He was raised in Brooklyn and served in the United States Air Force as a Senior Aircraft Mechanic during the Korean War before joining the New York City Fire Dept.; retiring after a 20 year career. On July 26, 1952, Ray and Mary were married at Our Lady of Refuge Church in Brooklyn and began a life together that was a perfect example of a true love story. They moved to the 'country' Center Moriches from Brooklyn and built the home that Ray lived in till his death. There, they raised their 8 children with care, hard work, good humor and an abundance of love. Every occasion, every achievement, every milestone, and every holiday was celebrated with a party. On St. Patrick's Day the beer was green and the Irish Rovers were loud. On Thanksgiving, the table sometimes sat almost 50 people and the desserts often out numbered the guests. The summers were filled with days at Cupsogue Beach, backyard BBQs, vacation trips and kick ball in the street. Although always missing his beloved Brooklyn Dodgers, Ray was an avid sports fan watching all the games in his director's chair in the open garage. The house was overflowing with love and night or day, the front door was never locked. Upon retiring at 47, Ray began his daily 4 mile walk round trip from home to Mary's crossing guard post at the East Moriches School. With the exception of Christmas, he walked everyday in every kind of weather right up until recently missing the occasional day. Leaving his house by 6am, Ray was often greeted by school bus drivers, cruising policemen, other walkers, commuters getting coffee, and other early risers and people out with their dogs. Everyone had a wave or horn beep or a few moments to share that made a real difference to the day for our father. Moving to the 'country' 59 years ago was the right decision as Center Moriches proved to be a community of friendly, generous and caring people. Our dad's passing is sad, however, his legacy to his children and grandchildren is of a life well lived and on his own terms. He's now with our Mom where he was always the happiest. We love you dad!
